NWFP - The Buffs East Kent Regiment at Bilot

NWFP - 1st Bn, East Kent Regiment ( The Buffs) - section under Lance Corporal James Smith VC under heavy fire at the village of Bilot in the Mamund Valley, India (now Pakistan) on 16th September, 1897 (Mohmand Campaign). Smith, who was twice severely wounded, continued to command his section and only lay down when he received a direct order to do so, and even then continued to fire on the enemy. It was the decided opinion of the officers present that it was only the gallantry of these thirteen men of the Buffs, the sappers and miners, that saved the whole party from complete annihilation and the British guns from capture. Date: 1897

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment during the Mohmand Campaign of 1897 in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) of India, now Pakistan. The scene unfolds at the village of Bilot in the Mamund Valley, where the 1st Battalion of the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) under the command of Lance Corporal James Smith VC, are valiantly defending their position against relentless enemy fire. Smith, a twice-wounded hero, is seen here leading his section of thirteen Buffs soldiers, sappers, and miners, as they bravely hold their ground amidst the chaos of battle. Despite his grievous injuries, Smith continued to command his men, only lying down when given a direct order to do so. His unwavering courage and determination were instrumental in saving the entire party from annihilation and safeguarding the British guns from capture. The image portrays the raw intensity of the conflict, with the Buffs soldiers huddled together, their faces etched with determination and focus. In the background, a red cross stretcher bearer attends to an injured soldier, while others prepare to return fire. The position of the Buffs, surrounded by the rugged terrain and the ominous clouds, underscores the harsh and unforgiving conditions they faced during the campaign. This powerful photograph is a testament to the heroism and resilience of the British soldiers who served in the NWFP during the late 19th century. It stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men in the defense of their country and the Empire.
