Panjdeh incident - Russian encounter with Afghan forces at Pul-i-Khishty (Brick Bridge)
Panjdeh incident - Russian encounter with Afghan forces at Pul-i-Khishty (Brick Bridge). The incident of 1885 was a diplomatic crisis between the British Empire and the Russian Empire caused by Russian expansion south-eastwards towards the Emirate of Afghanistan and the British Raj (India). After nearly completing the Russian conquest of Central Asia (Russian Turkestan) Russian forces captured an Afghan border fort. Seeing a threat to India, Britain came close to threatening war but both sides backed down and the matter was settled by diplomacy. The effect was to stop further Russian expansion in Asia, except for the Pamir Mountains and to define the north-western border of Afghanistan. Date: 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the tense moment during the Panjdeh Incident of 1885, a diplomatic crisis between the British Empire and the Russian Empire that brought the two powers to the brink of war. The Russian forces, seen here engaging in a skirmish with Afghan troops at the Pul-i-Khishty (Brick Bridge), had recently captured an Afghan border fort near the town of Panjdeh, located in what is now northern Afghanistan. The British, concerned about the potential threat to their Indian territories, saw this as a direct challenge to their interests in the region. Tensions escalated as both sides mobilized their military forces and exchanged threats. The Great Powers intervened, and after intense diplomatic negotiations, the Russians agreed to withdraw their troops from the disputed territory. The Panjdeh Incident marked the end of Russian expansion in Asia, except for the Pamir Mountains, and established the north-western border of Afghanistan. This significant event in the late 1880s highlighted the complex geopolitical dynamics of the time and the delicate balance of power between major world powers. The image of the Russian encounter with Afghan forces at Pul-i-Khishty (Brick Bridge) serves as a reminder of the historical significance of this diplomatic crisis and the lasting impact it had on the political landscape of Central Asia and South Asia.
