This photograph showcases the iconic Republic F-84G Thunderjet K-171 (51-10806, msn 2542-1259B), which once served in the Dutch military as a proud gate guard at Gilze-Rijen Air Base. The Thunderjet, a beloved aircraft of the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force, or Klu), was transferred from the United States to the Netherlands on 7 April 1953 and was given the registration K-171. However, it was retired from active service on 14 April 1953. Fast forward to circa 1967, and this historic aircraft could be found in storage at the National Military Museum (NMM) in Soesterberg, Netherlands. Despite being out of commission, the Thunderjet continued to inspire awe with its distinctive markings, including the K-40 and DU-24 insignia. The Republic F-84G Thunderjet was a versatile and powerful aircraft that saw extensive use during the post-World War II era. Its sleek design and impressive capabilities made it a formidable addition to the Dutch air force. Even in retirement, the Thunderjet remained an essential part of the country's aviation history.
