EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking 17th-century print depicts the biblical story of Pharaoh and his host drowned in the Red Sea as described in the Book of Exodus (14:21-31). The Old Testament narrative recounts how God, in response to the Israelites' pleas for deliverance from the pursuing Egyptian army, miraculously parted the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to cross safely on dry ground. Once the Israelites had reached the other side, God closed the waters above them, drowning Pharaoh and his entire army. The image captures the chaotic moment as the Egyptian soldiers and chariots are swallowed by the engulfing waters. Pharaoh, depicted in his regal attire, is shown in the foreground, frantically trying to escape the devastating flood. The turbulent waters churn around him, creating a sense of urgency and despair. The Egyptian soldiers and horses, trapped in the relentless tide, are shown in various stages of drowning, their desperate attempts to save themselves in vain. The print, created in the late 1600s, is a testament to the enduring power of the biblical narrative. The intricate detail and vivid colors bring the story to life, transporting the viewer back to the shores of the Red Sea during this pivotal moment in history. The image serves as a reminder of the Israelites' deliverance from slavery and the awe-inspiring power of God.
