EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, Pope Gregory XI (1370-1378), born Pierre Roger, is depicted in full papal regalia, radiating an aura of spiritual authority and wisdom. As the last French pope to date, Gregory XI's reign was marked by significant events that shaped the Catholic Church and European politics. Born in Aiguebelle, France, in 1329, Pierre Roger began his ecclesiastical career as a canon at Avignon. He rose through the ranks to become Cardinal Bishop of Tusculum in 1361. In 1370, following the death of Pope Urban VI, who was widely disputed due to his Italian origins, Pierre Roger was elected as the successor, taking the name Gregory XI. Gregory XI's papacy was a turning point for the Catholic Church. He made a momentous decision to return the papacy to Rome, ending the long period of Avignon captivity. This move was aimed at re-establishing the papacy's independence and restoring its spiritual and temporal power. The journey, known as the "Return of the Papacy to Rome," was a significant event in the history of the Church and European politics. Despite the challenges of rebuilding the papal states and dealing with the aftermath of the Great Schism, Gregory XI continued to focus on spiritual matters. He issued important decrees, such as the bull "Exsurge Domine," which called for the correction of errors in the sale of indulgences. The image of Pope Gregory XI captures the essence of a pivotal figure in the history of the Catholic Church. His decision to return the papacy to Rome marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Church's history and set the stage for the eventual end of the Schism. With a steadfast commitment to spiritual leadership, Gregory XI left an indelible mark on the Church and the world.
