EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful photograph captures a young and radiant Princess May of Teck, later known as Queen Mary, in the year 1892, just a year before she was unexpectedly thrust into the role of consort to the British monarchy. At the time, Princess May was engaged to Prince Albert Victor, the eldest son of King Edward VII, but tragedy struck when Albert Victor passed away suddenly in December 1892 due to the worldwide influenza pandemic. During the shared period of mourning, a close bond formed between Princess May and Albert Victor's brother, Prince George, Duke of York. The following year, in July 1893, the Duke of York proposed to Princess May, and they were married in a quiet and somber ceremony. In this image, the young princess is seen wearing a simple yet elegant pearl necklace, adding an air of sophistication and grace to her youthful appearance. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the unexpected twists and turns that life can take, and the resilience and strength of those who must navigate them.
