EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant illustration commemorates the heroic actions of Private John Joseph Caffrey VC, a brave soldier from the Lancashire Fusiliers during the First World War. The image depicts the moment of Caffrey's Victoria Cross (VC) award-winning act of bravery, which took place near La Brique, France, in November 1915. The scene unfolds as Caffrey and a corporal from the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) attempt to rescue a wounded comrade lying in the open, exposed to enemy fire. Their first attempt is thwarted by shrapnel from the enemy trenches, but they do not give up. They bravely try again, managing to reach the wounded man and bandage his injuries. However, as they attempt to lift him up, the RAMC corporal is tragically shot in the head. Despite this setback, Caffrey's courage and determination did not falter. He quickly bandaged the corporal and helped him back to safety. With unwavering resolve, Caffrey then returned to the battlefield to bring in the other wounded man, demonstrating an extraordinary level of selflessness and bravery. Caffrey's Victoria Cross citation reads, "For most conspicuous bravery. On 16th November, 1915, near La Brique, France, a man was badly wounded and lying in the open, unable to move, in full view of and about 350 yards from the enemy's trenches. A corporal of the RAMC and Private Caffrey at once tried to rescue him, but at the first attempt were driven back by shrapnel from enemy fire. They tried again and succeeded in reaching and bandaging the wounded man. However, just as they were lifting him up, the RAMC corporal was shot in the head. Private Caffrey bandaged the corporal and helped him back to safety, and then returned and brought in the other wounded man." This powerful image serves as a testament to the heroism, bravery, and courage displayed by Private John Joseph Caffrey VC during the First World War on the Western Front.
