EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair aircraft, specifically G-ASKN, also known as Pont DAvignon. The ATL-98 Carvair is a unique and iconic plane that was originally designed for the purpose of transporting cars, trucks, and other cargo between Europe and Britain during the late 1940s and 1950s. The plane in this image, G-ASKN, was one of the last remaining operational Carvairs and was owned by the British Airways Heritage Collection. Its distinctive design, featuring a large rear cargo door and a convertible roof, allowed for the easy loading and unloading of vehicles and other large cargo. The Carvair was manufactured by Aviation Traders, a British company that was formed in 1945 to produce aircraft for post-war civilian use. The Carvair was based on the Douglas DC-4 Dakota, a popular military transport plane, but was modified to include a large cargo hold and other features that made it ideal for cargo transport. Despite its impressive size and capabilities, the Carvair was only in production for a few years, with only 27 examples being built. Today, G-ASKN and a few other surviving Carvairs are cherished by aviation enthusiasts and serve as a reminder of the innovative aircraft designs that emerged in the aftermath of World War II. This photograph, taken at an airshow or aviation event, captures the Carvair in all its glory, with its distinctive livery and cargo doors wide open, revealing the spacious interior that once transported vehicles and other cargo across the English Channel.
