EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by Cibera in the year 1853, depicts a significant moment in the life of Saint Martin of Braga, a revered figure in Christian history. Born in Sabaria, in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula around 520 AD, Martin later became the Archbishop of Bracara Augusta, now known as Braga, Portugal. The scene portrayed in this image is a testament to Martin's legendary act of compassion and generosity. As the story goes, while Martin was still a soldier in the Roman army, he was riding his horse in the cold winter night. He encountered a beggar at the city gates, who was shivering in the freezing cold. Moved by compassion, Martin took his military cloak off and cut it in half with his sword, giving one half to the beggar. This selfless act of kindness left a profound impact on Martin, leading him to renounce his military career and dedicate his life to Christianity. The image captures the essence of this heartwarming story, with Saint Martin, dressed in episcopal attire, sharing his cloak with the beggar. The horse, a common symbol of Martin's soldierly past, stands by, adding to the rich historical context of the scene. This engraving, colored and beautifully detailed, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Saint Martin of Braga and the Christian values he embodied.
