EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative studio photograph captures the stoic presence of Sergeant Emile Verheyen of the 3rd Regt de Ligne, Belgian Army. The image, dated 1915, shows Emile in his military uniform, leaning casually against a pillar with an air of quiet determination. The inscription on the back reads "Souvenir de Emile Verheyen, 1er Sergent, 3rd Regt de Ligne, 1er D.A. Envoyé e l Yser (près de Ypres) le 13.9.15." This translates to "Souvenir of Emile Verheyen, 1st Sergeant, 3rd Regiment of the Line, 1st Detachment, Sent to Ypres (near Ypres) on September 13, 1915." Emile was a patient at the Quex Park VAD Hospital in Birchington-on-Sea, England, between November 14, 1914, and March 29, 1915. The hospital, run by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment, was commanded by Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy H.G. Powell-Cotton of Quex Park, who founded the Powell-Cotton Museum. The hospital opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919. Emile's time at the hospital was marked by the horrors of war, but it was also a period of transformation. During his stay, he married a Belgian girl in Ramsgate in 1916. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the larger conflict, and the resilience and strength of those who endured it.
