EDITORS COMMENTS
Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester (1355-1397), was the seventh son of King Edward III of England. He is depicted in this striking portrait, which dates from the late 14th century, around the time of his rise to power. Thomas was a key figure in English politics during the late medieval period, serving as a virtual ruler of England from 1386 to 1389. Born in Woodstock Palace, Oxfordshire, Thomas was educated at Oxford University and served in various military campaigns under his father. However, it was his opposition to King Richard II that would define his political career. In 1386, Thomas was appointed Lord Chamberlain and later Lord High Admiral, giving him significant influence over the king's government. Thomas's power base grew as he allied himself with the influential Lords Appellant, who sought to limit the power of the monarchy. In 1388, Thomas played a leading role in the deposition of Richard II's favored advisor, Robert Tresilian, and the subsequent trial and execution of other royal favorites. Despite his political successes, Thomas's actions did not go unchallenged. In 1389, Richard II regained the upper hand and had Thomas and several other Lords Appellant arrested and imprisoned in Calais. Thomas was eventually released, but his political fortunes continued to decline. In 1397, he was accused of treason and executed on the orders of Richard II. This portrait of Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester, captures the intensity and determination of a man who played a pivotal role in English politics during a tumultuous period of history. His story serves as a reminder of the complex power struggles and shifting alliances that characterized medieval political life.
