EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the iconic Vickers VC10 K3 ZA147, a historic aircraft that once graced the skies as part of the 101 Squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF), based at RAF Brize Norton. The image, captured around the turn of the millennium, depicts the VC10 in its military livery, a stark contrast to its previous life with British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). The Vickers VC10, a British long-range, turboprop-powered airliner, first entered service with BOAC in 1963. With its distinctive wing design and powerful engines, the VC10 quickly became a symbol of British aviation prowess. However, by the late 1990s, the VC10s were retired from commercial use and several were acquired by the RAF for various roles, including transport and refueling. ZA147, one of the few VC10s to have served both with BOAC and the RAF, can be seen here at its new home at RAF Brize Norton. The aircraft's military markings and the backdrop of the RAF base underscore its new role in the air force. The image captures the VC10's timeless beauty and the rich history of this remarkable aircraft, which continues to be a fascinating chapter in the annals of aviation history.
