EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the raw power and beauty of the North Sea as it crashes against the shoreline of Morecambe, Lancashire, in England. The frothy white waves, tinged with the golden hues of the setting sun, relentlessly pound the sandy beach, sending plumes of spray high into the air. Just visible in the background, to the right, stands the iconic Morecambe Tower, a grand Victorian-era structure that once dominated the waterfront. Built in 1898, the Morecambe Tower was an impressive sight, standing tall at some 232 feet high. It served as both a popular tourist attraction and a navigational aid for seafarers. However, its steel frame, which made it a symbol of engineering prowess, proved to be its downfall. With the onset of the First World War, the steel was deemed essential for munitions production, and the tower was demolished in 1911. This photograph, taken circa 1911, offers a glimpse into a bygone era. The image not only showcases the natural splendor of the sea but also serves as a poignant reminder of the history and heritage that once defined the Morecambe waterfront.
