Pupils at St Patricks Primary School were so impressed by a school trip that they
Pupils at St Patricks Primary School were so impressed by a school trip that they decided to turn their hands to sculpture. Two classes went on a visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton, near Wakefield. The park has its own education officer who gives details of exhibitions to schools and shows groups around. The St Patricks pupils saw the exhibitions by sculpters from Zimbabwe, in Africa, who are considered to be among the best in the world. Some of the sculpters were even at the park and talked to the visitors about their work. Class teacher, Mr Sutcliffe, who organised the trip, spent part of his summer holiday in Zimbabwe and used to live there. When they got back to school, the pupils started work on their own creations in plasticine. Nina Lubelska is pictured showing her sculpture as other pupils look on. 27th September 1990

EDITORS COMMENTS
Pupils at St Patricks Primary School showcase their artistic talents after an inspiring school trip. Two classes embarked on a visit to the renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park, located in West Bretton near Wakefield. Guided by the park's dedicated education officer, the students were captivated by exhibitions featuring sculptors from Zimbabwe, considered among the world's finest. The young learners had the unique opportunity to engage with some of these talented artists themselves, as they shared insights into their remarkable creations. The trip was organized by Mr Sutcliffe, a teacher at St Patricks who spent part of his summer holiday in Zimbabwe and has personal connections to the country. Upon returning to school, fueled by newfound inspiration and creativity, pupils eagerly set out to craft their own sculptures using plasticine. In this print captured on September 27th, 1990, Nina Lubelska proudly presents her sculpture while fellow classmates marvel at her creation. This snapshot from Huddersfield Examiner Archive takes us back to 'all our yesterdays, ' reminding us of how art can ignite imagination and foster cultural appreciation even within young minds.
