Start of the construction of the Berlin Wall. At midnight on 13th August
Start of the construction of the Berlin Wall.
At midnight on 13th August the police and units of the East German army began to close the border and, by Sunday morning, 13 August, the border with West Berlin was closed. East German troops and workers had begun to tear up streets running alongside the border to make them impassable to most vehicles and to install barbed wire entanglements and fences along the 156 kilometres around the three western sectors as well as the 43 kilometres that divided West and East Berlin.
Picture shows: Scenes on the streets of Berlin after the East West border was closed in preparation for the walls construction. Tanks have been deployed as a second line of security to prevent East Berliners breaking through to the sector border.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the historic moment when the construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13,1961. As midnight struck, police forces and East German army units swiftly moved to close off the border with West Berlin. By Sunday morning, a physical barrier had been erected, dividing families and friends who once freely crossed between the two sides. In this poignant image, we witness scenes from the streets of Berlin after the border closure. The atmosphere is tense as tanks are deployed as an additional layer of security to prevent any attempts by East Berliners to break through to the sector border. The city's landscape has drastically changed; streets have been torn up and made impassable for most vehicles while barbed wire entanglements and fences stretch along a staggering total of 199 kilometers. The photograph serves as a stark reminder of one of history's most visible symbols of division during the Cold War era. It encapsulates not only physical barriers but also emotional ones that separated loved ones for decades until its eventual fall in 1989. Terry Fincher's expert lens captures both the human element - people going about their daily lives amidst this new reality - and the imposing presence of military machinery guarding against any potential breaches. This print transports us back in time, allowing us to reflect on a significant chapter in world history marked by conflict, separation, resilience, and ultimately reunification.
