EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to 1929, when the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) sought to entice travelers with a stunning poster promoting rail services to Caernarvon Castle in Wales. The artwork, masterfully created by Norman Wilkinson, showcases the medieval fortress built by Edward I across the Menai Straits. Caernarvon Castle stands proudly as a symbol of English dominance over the subdued Welsh population during that era. Its imposing structure was intended not only as a seat of power but also as a constant reminder of England's control over Wales. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported to an age where castles held great significance and were awe-inspiring symbols of authority. Wilkinson's artistic prowess shines through in this railway poster. Having studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art, he became renowned for his marine paintings and went on to design posters for various railway companies. In fact, he organized the Royal Academy series of posters for the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) in 1924. The National Railway Museum has preserved this remarkable piece from their Pictorial Collection. It serves as both a testament to the historical importance of Caernarvon Castle and an exquisite example of early 20th-century railway advertising artistry. Let your imagination wander back in time as you admire this print and envision yourself embarking on a journey through history aboard LMS trains towards this majestic Welsh landmark.
