Lithograph with later hand colouring combining two of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins

Lithograph with later hand colouring combining two of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins six wall posters Waterhouse Hawkins Diagrams of the Extinct Animals produced for the Department of Science and Art in 1862. It includes nearly all the dinosaurs known up to that date. From left 1 & 2 Iguanodon, 3 Hylaeosaurus, 4&5 Megalosaurus. On cliffs in background are pterosaurs (not dnosaurs). In 1855 Waterhouse Hawkins produced lifesize reconstructions, with the scientific help of Richard Owen, for the gardens of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. When that project was curtailed he continued to use the designs for artwork such as this, also producing scale models of the sculptures for sale. Later he travelled to the USA where he began work on a similar project in New Yorks Central Park using more complete skeletal remains of dinosaurs recently discovered there

EDITORS COMMENTS
Travel back in time with this incredible lithograph! Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins takes us on a prehistoric adventure, combining his famous wall posters and intricate hand coloring to bring dinosaurs to life. From the fearsome Megalosaurus to the gentle Iguanodon, these ancient creatures are beautifully captured in stunning detail. But it doesn't stop there! Look closely at the cliffs in the background and you'll spot graceful pterosaurs soaring through the skies. These magnificent beasts may not be dinosaurs, but they add an extra touch of wonder to this already mesmerizing artwork. Hawkins' passion for paleontology shines through as he expertly recreates these extinct animals. With scientific guidance from Richard Owen, he even went on to create lifelike sculptures for Crystal Palace gardens. And when that project ended prematurely, Hawkins continued his artistic journey by producing scale models and breathtaking illustrations like this one. This 19th-century masterpiece is a testament to both artistry and scientific discovery. It's a window into a world long gone, where giants roamed and mysteries awaited unraveling. So hang up this print and let your imagination take flight alongside these ancient wonders!
