EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the historic moment of the maiden flight of the Bristol Brabazon (G-AGPW) on 27 October 1949 at Filton, near Bristol, England. The Brabazon was a prototype airliner designed and built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company in the post-war era, named after Sir Geoffrey Brabazon, then President of the Royal Aeronautical Society. The Brabazon was a groundbreaking aircraft, boasting a wingspan of 162 feet and a length of 147 feet, making it one of the largest aircraft in the world at the time. Its innovative design featured a twin-hull fuselage, which was intended to provide greater cabin space and comfort for passengers. The aircraft was also equipped with four Rolls-Royce Nene engines, which provided a top speed of over 400 miles per hour. The Brabazon was a significant development in the field of aviation, marking a new era in aircraft design and capability. However, despite its impressive specifications, the Brabazon failed to secure commercial orders and only one prototype was built. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of the designers and engineers who brought this remarkable aircraft to life. This photograph was taken by Charles E. Brown during the RAF's (Royal Air Force) involvement in the testing and evaluation of the Brabazon. The image provides a unique insight into the excitement and anticipation surrounding the maiden flight of this pioneering aircraft.
