1854 Philip Gosse colour litho of anemone

Anemone chromolithograph by Philip Henry Gosse, from Gosses " The Aquarium, an unveiling of the wonders of the deep sea" London Van Voorst 1854. Gosse coined the term Aquarium" and was among the first to popularise it as a hobby. A highly respected naturalist and illustrator, he was pivotal to the establishment of the London Zoos fish house in 1852, supplying the nucleus of their stock. Initially a supporter of Darwin, Gosses torment between the revealed truth of the Bible and scientific knowledge caused him to publish his book " Omphalos" to explain how the earth, though created in seven days, appeared much older. The book was not well received even by churchmen and Gosses reputation was damaged

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning 1854 colour lithograph of anemone, created by the talented Philip Henry Gosse. The artwork is derived from Gosse's renowned book "The Aquarium, an unveiling of the wonders of the deep sea" which played a significant role in popularizing aquariums as a hobby. An esteemed naturalist and illustrator, Gosse was instrumental in establishing London Zoo's fish house in 1852, providing them with their initial stock. Gosse's contributions to science were not without controversy. Initially supportive of Darwin's theories, he found himself torn between scientific knowledge and his unwavering belief in the revealed truth of the Bible. This internal struggle led him to publish "Omphalos" a book attempting to reconcile how Earth could appear older despite being created in seven days. Unfortunately, this publication received criticism even from churchmen and tarnished Gosse's reputation. In this remarkable artwork, we witness Gosse's exceptional talent for capturing marine life with intricate detail and vibrant colors. The anemone depicted here serves as a testament to his skillful illustration techniques and deep understanding of biology. Paul D. Stewart has masterfully captured this historical piece from Science Photo Library, allowing us to appreciate both its artistic beauty and its significance within the realms of marine biology and scientific history.
