Aleksey Nikolayevich Bakh (1857-1946), Soviet biochemist, in a laboratory. Bakh was the founder of Soviet biochemistry, and became a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1929. In his youth, he had been a revolutionary, emigrating in 1885. He returned to Russia in 1917, following the revolution. A year later he founded the Physico-Chemical Institute in Moscow, and then the Biochemical Institute. His research interests included photosynthesis, respiration, oxidation, and fermentation.
