Chaos map. Computer model of chaos produced by a repeated mathematical operation

Chaos map. Computer model of chaos produced by a repeated mathematical operation (iteration) called mapping. Mathematical mapping involves repeating rules that tell you how to change the original object. The rules may say where the point should move to, and what the new colour should be. This can produce patterns of great complexity from simple origins. This map started as 500 points which were mapped hundreds of thousands of times. The colours are obtained with a wave mechanics concept called the de Broglie phase. This produces a semi-classical approximation to a full quantum chaos map. This model was created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing Chaos map, created through the intricate process of mathematical mapping. The image represents a computer model of chaos generated by repeated iterations, resulting in patterns of remarkable complexity emerging from simple origins. To bring this artwork to life, Professor Eric Heller employed the concept of de Broglie phase from wave mechanics, which grants it a semi-classical approximation to full quantum chaos. In this masterpiece, 500 points were meticulously mapped hundreds of thousands of times, unveiling an abstract landscape that transcends traditional boundaries between art and science. The vibrant colors adorning the chaotic terrain are not arbitrary; they are carefully determined by the mathematical rules governing each point's movement and its corresponding new hue. This fusion between mathematics and artistic expression produces a visually stunning representation that captivates viewers with its intricacy. As both physicist and artist, Professor Eric Heller has skillfully simulated this chaotic world using cutting-edge computer models and simulations. His creation serves as a testament to the profound interplay between physical phenomena and mathematical concepts within our universe. By delving into chaos theory and embracing iteration as his creative muse, Heller has crafted an awe-inspiring piece that invites contemplation on the inherent beauty found within complex systems. This extraordinary artwork is brought to you by Science Photo Library—an embodiment of their commitment to showcasing scientific research through visually striking images while highlighting the immense potential for collaboration between artistry and academia.
