Eskimo nebula
Eskimo nebula. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the Eskimo planetary nebula (NGC 2393). Planetary nebulae are formed when a Sun-like star ejects its outer layers at the end of its life. These form bubbles of gas illuminated by the dying stars radiation. This star (centre) began ejecting matter around 10, 000 years ago, and the fastest material is travelling at 1.5 million kilometres per hour. The Eskimo nebula is 5000 light years from Earth. This image was taken by the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on the HST on January 10-11th 2000, the first image taken after the HSTs December 1999 repair mission

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Eskimo nebula, a planetary nebula located 5000 light years away from Earth. Captured by the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on January 10-11th, 2000, this image marks an important milestone as it was taken shortly after the telescope's repair mission in December 1999. The Eskimo nebula is formed when a Sun-like star reaches the end of its life and expels its outer layers into space. These expelled materials create stunning bubbles of gas that are illuminated by the dying star's radiation. The star at the center of this celestial spectacle began ejecting matter approximately 10,000 years ago, with some fragments hurtling through space at an astonishing speed of 1.5 million kilometers per hour. The intricate details captured in this photograph offer a glimpse into the fascinating cosmic processes that shape our universe. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant worlds and our relentless pursuit to unravel their mysteries. With its vibrant colors and ethereal glow, this image is not only a visual masterpiece but also a reminder of how small we are in comparison to the vastness of space. It invites us to contemplate our place within this grand tapestry and sparks wonder about what lies beyond our own planet Earth.
