Human ear anatomy
Human ear anatomy. Computer artwork of the structure of the human ear, showing the outer ear (left), middle ear and inner ear (right). The ear drum (tympanic membrane, centre) separates the inner and middle ear, and transmits sound to the ossicles (centre right). This system of tiny bones transmits sound from the air-filled middle ear to the fluid filled cochlea (coiled, lower right) in the inner ear. The cochlea contains the organ of corti (cutaway), which contains rows of hair cells topped with stereocilia. These cilia touch the tectorial membrane and detect tiny movements caused by sound-induced pressures in the inner ear fluids, which are translated into nerve impulses that travel to the brain, where they are deciphered as sound

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate anatomy of the human ear, beautifully depicted through computer artwork. The image portrays a comprehensive view of the outer ear on the left side, followed by the middle and inner ear structures on the right. At its center lies the eardrum, also known as tympanic membrane, which acts as a barrier between these two regions while transmitting sound to the ossicles. The system of delicate bones located in the middle ear is responsible for transferring sound vibrations from this air-filled chamber to the fluid-filled cochlea situated in the inner ear's lower right corner. Within this coiled structure resides an extraordinary organ called corti, featuring rows of hair cells topped with stereocilia. These microscopic cilia make contact with a tectorial membrane and detect minuscule movements caused by sound-induced pressures within our inner ear fluids. These detected movements are then translated into nerve impulses that embark on a journey towards our brain where they are decoded into meaningful sounds we perceive. This remarkable process enables us to experience one of our most vital senses - hearing. Through this visually stunning illustration, Science Photo Library provides us with an opportunity to marvel at both nature's complexity and our body's incredible ability to detect and interpret sounds accurately.
