Indian miniature, animal kindness ahimsa

An Indian Rajput style miniature dating to 19th century showing Ahimsa. Ahimsa is a tenet of the Indian Religions (Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism) meaning kindness and non-violence towards living things including animals. The black buck (male and female shown here) were kept in menageries by Moguls who were also keen hunters (using cheetah amongst other animals). The mogul style headwear could also suggest that a prince attending his menagerie is a possible alternative (and less gentle) theme of the image

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century Indian Rajput style miniature, captured in a photo print, beautifully portrays the essence of Ahimsa. Ahimsa, a fundamental principle embraced by Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, embodies kindness and non-violence towards all living beings, including animals. In this intricate artwork, we witness the gentle nature of humanity coexisting with wildlife. The image showcases a pair of black bucks gracefully standing amidst an opulent setting. These magnificent creatures were once held captive in menageries by the Moguls - avid hunters who utilized cheetahs and other animals for their pursuits. However, this depiction hints at an alternative interpretation; it could portray a prince attending his menagerie rather than emphasizing their hunting prowess. The artist's attention to detail is evident through the portrayal of both human subjects and animals alike. The regal headwear worn by the figures suggests royalty or nobility while also adding depth to the narrative. This juxtaposition invites contemplation on our relationship with nature – whether one chooses to embrace compassion or dominance over it. Paul D. Stewart's illustration serves as a reminder that animal rights and welfare have long been integral aspects of Indian culture. It prompts us to reflect upon our own choices regarding vegetarianism and how we can embody ahimsa in our daily lives.
