Pilot ACE computer components, 1950 C013 / 7164
Pilot ACE computer components. View of short delay lines for the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE) pilot model. This was a preliminary version of the full ACE design, which had been proposed by the British computer scientist and mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954). The Pilot ACE was one of the first computers built in the UK, and was constructed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK. It began operating in 1951, and was used until 1955. A commercial version, the DEUCE, was manufactured between 1955 and 1964. Photographed in 1950

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate components of the Pilot ACE computer, a groundbreaking technological marvel of its time. Taken in 1950 at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK, this image offers a glimpse into the early days of computing history. The Pilot ACE was an experimental model that preceded the full ACE design proposed by Alan Turing, a renowned British mathematician and computer scientist. With its pioneering use of vacuum tubes and mercury delay lines, this computational masterpiece revolutionized the field of electronic engineering. In this snapshot, we see a close-up view of short delay lines that formed an integral part of the memory system for the Pilot ACE. These meticulously wired components played a crucial role in performing complex calculations and storing data within this cutting-edge machine. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its representation of advanced technology but also as a testament to British innovation during the mid-20th century. The Pilot ACE marked one of United Kingdom's first forays into computer construction and paved the way for subsequent advancements in computing technology. As we admire these historical artifacts captured through monochrome lenses, let us appreciate how far we have come since those early days when wires and vacuum tubes laid down foundations for our modern digital world.
