Venus transit, 8th June 2004, TRACE image

Transit of Venus. Ultraviolet TRACE image of Venus (black circle) crossing (transiting) the face of the Sun. This image was taken at 06:03 GMT on 8th June 2004. This was the first transit since 1882. Transits of Venus occur in pairs separated by eight years, with 121.5 and 104.5 years alternately between pairs. The next transit will be in June 2012. Venus is an Earth-sized planet that orbits between the Earth and the Sun. It orbits at just over two-thirds of the Earth-Sun distance, at around 108 million kilometres. It does not transit the Sun during every orbit as it does not orbit in the exact same plane as Earth. Image taken at a wavelength of 160 nanometres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a rare celestial event - the Venus transit on 8th June 2004. In this TRACE image, we witness the remarkable sight of Venus, represented by a black circle, gracefully crossing the face of our Sun. This extraordinary occurrence had not been witnessed since 1882 and would not be observed again until June 2012. Venus, an Earth-sized planet situated between our home planet and the Sun, orbits at around two-thirds of the distance between Earth and its fiery neighbor. However, due to its slightly different orbital plane compared to Earth's, it does not transit across the Sun during every orbit. The ultraviolet wavelength used in capturing this image reveals intricate details that are otherwise invisible to human eyes. The stunning red hue surrounding Venus adds a touch of ethereal beauty to this otherworldly scene. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing photograph taken at precisely 06:03 GMT on that historic day in June 2004, we are reminded of both the vastness and intricacy of our solar system. It serves as a reminder that even within seemingly infinite space lies an order governed by precise astronomical calculations. Courtesy of Science Photo Library's expertise in astrophysics imagery, we can appreciate and marvel at these cosmic phenomena from afar.
