Volcano on Mars
Martian volcano. Coloured Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) image of the Apollinaris Patera volcano (upper centre) near the Martian equator. A patch of clouds (white) is seen by its lower left edge. This volcano is around 5 kilometres (km) in height, and the crater is some 80 km across. Clouds on Mars often form around high structures, and are composed mainly of carbon dioxide ice crystals. This image was taken in 1999, and was coloured by combining red and blue light images from the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) on the MGS. MGS is a NASA satellite orbiting Mars which has been observing and mapping the planet from orbit since 1998

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print showcases the captivating beauty of a volcano on Mars. The image, captured by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) in 1999, reveals the Apollinaris Patera volcano standing tall near the Martian equator. With its peak reaching an impressive height of approximately 5 kilometers, this volcanic wonder dominates the surrounding landscape. Intriguingly, a patch of clouds can be seen hovering near the lower left edge of the volcano. These ethereal formations, composed mainly of carbon dioxide ice crystals, often form around high structures on Mars. Their presence adds an enchanting touch to this already mesmerizing scene. The crater surrounding Apollinaris Patera is equally awe-inspiring, spanning an expansive 80 kilometers across. Its vastness serves as a testament to the immense power and geological activity that shaped this extraterrestrial world. To create this visually striking image, red and blue light images from MOC were combined to enhance details and provide a more vibrant representation of Mars' surface features. Since its launch in 1998, MGS has been diligently orbiting Mars and meticulously mapping its terrain. This NASA satellite has provided invaluable insights into our neighboring planet's geology and atmospheric phenomena. This print from Science Photo Library offers us a glimpse into the otherworldly wonders that await exploration beyond our own planet's boundaries.
