Measuring at 5 7/8 x 4 1/8 inches, this print showcases the talent and skill of Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, who was also known as Parmigianino. Born in Parma in 1503, Parmigianino's work gained great interest following the influence of Raphael. Using prints as a medium to disseminate knowledge and designs, Parmigianino produced drawings that were later translated into engravings. One notable collaborator was Giovanni Jacopo Caraglio, an artist active between the years ca. 1500 to ca. 1565. This particular print is drawn directly from woodblocks carved by Antonio da Trento, an artist active during the early 1520s to 1530s. The technique used here is chiaroscuro woodcuts which allowed for a striking contrast between light and dark areas.
