EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph depicts a gathering of Chiefs from the Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii, taken from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published in Meissen around 1835-1840. The image captures the grandeur and cultural significance of the Hawaiian monarchy during this period. In the center, Kiaimoukou, the High Priest of Maui, stands prominently with a large tattooed torso and holding a staff. He wears a traditional Hawaiian loincloth and a feathered headdress. To his right, King Cox of Oahu is depicted wearing a flowing robe and a crown adorned with feathers and shells. He holds a staff topped with a bird of paradise. The other chiefs in the image are also dressed in their traditional attire, showcasing the intricate tattoos that were an essential part of Hawaiian culture. Tattoos were a symbol of rank, status, and genealogy, and each design was unique to the individual. The presence of the European officer in the background, dressed in military uniform, underscores the interaction between the Hawaiian people and the outside world during this time. This interaction led to the spread of new ideas, technologies, and cultural exchanges. This ethnographic image provides a glimpse into the rich history and customs of the Hawaiian people, showcasing their unique costumes, tattoos, and cultural practices. The handcolored lithograph is a valuable historical record of a time when the Hawaiian monarchy was at its height, and the islands were still largely untouched by the modern world.
