This 17th century print depicts Daniel's visions as described in the Book of Daniel, chapter 7, from the Old Testament of the Bible. The vision, which occurred around 550 BC, is a pivotal moment in biblical prophecy, revealing the future empires of Assyria, Persia, Greece, and Rome. Daniel, a Hebrew prophet, is shown in the center of the image, prostrate in prayer before God. Surrounding him are four mysterious beasts, each representing one of the four kingdoms. The first beast, with the wings of an eagle, represents the Babylonian Empire, which had previously conquered Judah. The second beast, with the wings of a lion and the mouth of a bear, represents the Medo-Persian Empire. The third beast, with the body of a leopard and four heads, represents the Grecian Empire, and the fourth beast, with the body of a fearsome dragon, represents the Roman Empire.
