EDITORS COMMENTS
Ismail Pasha, also known as Khedive Ismail, was a pivotal figure in Egyptian history, serving as the Viceroy of Egypt from 1863 to 1879. Born in 1830, Ismail Pasha rose to power during a time of significant change in Egypt, as the country was transitioning from Ottoman rule to a more autonomous state. During his reign, Ismail Pasha embarked on an ambitious program of modernization and development. He rebuilt the city of Cairo, constructing grand new buildings, broadening streets, and introducing modern infrastructure such as a telegraph system and a horse-drawn tramway. Ismail Pasha's most notable achievement, however, was the expansion and modernization of the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal, which had been built by the French under the direction of Ferdinand de Lesseps in the 1850s, was a vital strategic and economic asset for Egypt and the world. Ismail Pasha recognized its importance and worked to improve its operations and expand its capacity. He also sought to strengthen Egypt's relationship with European powers, particularly Britain, in order to secure financial and military support for his modernization efforts. In 1875, Ismail Pasha sold his shares in the Suez Canal Company to Britain for a large sum of money. This transaction, known as the "Suez Canal Scandal," caused a political crisis in Egypt and led to the eventual deposition of Ismail Pasha in 1879. Despite the controversy surrounding his sale of the canal shares, Ismail Pasha's legacy as a visionary leader who modernized Egypt and expanded its influence on the global stage endures to this day. This photograph captures Ismail Pasha in his later years, with a serious expression and dressed in the traditional robes of an Egyptian pasha. The image serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of Egypt during the late 19th century and the pivotal role played by its leaders, such as Ismail Pasha, in shaping the country's future.
