EDITORS COMMENTS
Cobaea penduliflora, also known as the Mexican bellflower or Father Cobo's trumpet vine, is a stunning ornamental climber native to Mexico and parts of Venezuela. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph is an illustration from the horticultural masterpiece "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l Europe" (Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe), published in Ghent, Belgium, in 1870 by renowned horticulturists Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires. The Cobaea penduliflora is named in honor of Father Barnabe Cobo, a 17th-century Spanish Jesuit missionary and ethnographer who documented the flora and fauna of Mexico and Peru. The vine's captivating, pendulous flowers, which can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches) long, are characterized by their trumpet-shaped, five-lobed corollas that bloom in shades of purple, pink, and white. This beautiful lithograph showcases the Cobaea penduliflora's intricate details, from the delicate veining on its leaves to the delicate petals of its flowers. The vine's tendrils are depicted twining gracefully around a support, demonstrating its natural climbing habit. The lush, verdant foliage and the vibrant, blooming flowers create a striking contrast, making this plant a true treasure for any botanical garden or hothouse. The Cobaea penduliflora is still popular today for its ornamental value and is often cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. This image serves as a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the dedication of Van Houtte and Lemaires in documenting and preserving it for future generations.
