EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" or "Picture Book for Children," published in Weimar, Germany, in 1802, showcases four exotic butterflies native to Surinam: the Brown Page Butterfly (Siproeta epaphus), Morpho Adonis in both its upper and lower sides. The Brown Page Butterfly, also known as the Blue-spotted Tiger or the Common Tiger Longwing, is depicted in the first two images. This butterfly is characterized by its large wingspan, which can reach up to 12 centimeters, and its vibrant orange-brown wings adorned with blue spots. The Brown Page Butterfly is a common sight in Surinam and other parts of South America, particularly in forests and gardens. The Morpho Adonis, displayed in the last three images, is a large and striking butterfly, with wingspans reaching up to 15 centimeters. Its upper side is a deep, iridescent blue, while its underside is a dull brown. The Morpho Adonis is also known as the Blue Morpho or the Blue-banded Morpho, due to the thin, white bands that run across its wings. This butterfly is native to Central and South America, and is a popular subject in entomology and natural history due to its unique appearance. This engraving, with its intricate details and vivid colors, serves as a testament to the natural beauty of Surinam and the wider world of Lepidoptera, or butterflies and moths. It is an educational and visually stunning piece that would have captivated the imagination of children in the early 19th century, just as it continues to do so today.
