This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" or "Picture Book for Children," published in Weimar, Germany, in 1802, showcases four exotic butterflies native to Surinam: the Brown Page Butterfly (Siproeta epaphus), Morpho Adonis in both its upper and lower sides. The Brown Page Butterfly, also known as the Blue-spotted Tiger or the Common Tiger Longwing, is depicted in the first two images. This butterfly is characterized by its large wingspan, which can reach up to 12 centimeters, and its vibrant orange-brown wings adorned with blue spots. The Brown Page Butterfly is a common sight in Surinam and other parts of South America, particularly in forests and gardens. The Morpho Adonis, displayed in the last three images, is a large and striking butterfly, with wingspans reaching up to 15 centimeters. Its upper side is a deep, iridescent blue, while its underside is a dull brown.
