EDITORS COMMENTS
Flax, or Linum usitatissimum, is a fibre-bearing flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region and western Asia, now cultivated extensively in cooler climates worldwide. This exquisitely hand-coloured copperplate engraving is a beautiful representation of the plant as it appeared in the late 19th century, taken from Dr. Willibald Artus' comprehensive Handbook of all medical-pharmaceutical plants, published in Jena, Germany, in 1876. The plant is depicted in its full glory, with its slender, erect stem adorned with delicate, blue-violet flowers. The leaves are shown in various stages of growth, from the fresh, bright green of new growth to the more muted tones of the mature foliage. The plant's seeds, or linseeds, are also shown, nestled within the ripe pods. Flax holds a significant place in human history, with records of its cultivation dating back to ancient Egypt. The plant was prized for its fibres, which were used to make linen cloth, as well as for its medicinal properties. The seeds were used to produce linseed oil, which was used as a laxative, a source of omega-3 fatty acids, and a component in paints and varnishes. This stunning botanical illustration not only captures the beauty of the plant but also serves as a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and scientific rigour of the time. It is a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of flax and its many uses, both as a textile and as a valuable source of medicine.
