In this stunning 17th-century copperplate engraving, we find a regal and imposing portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Henry II, also known as Henry the Exuberant or Saint Henry the Pious. Born in 973, Henry was the second son of Emperor Otto II and Theophanu, the Byzantine princess. He ascended to the throne in 1002 following the death of his elder brother, Otto III, and ruled until his own death in 1024. Henry II is depicted here in the grandeur of his imperial regalia, wearing a crown adorned with precious gems and a mantle draped over his shoulders. The emperor's right hand rests on a scepter, symbolizing his royal power, while his left hand holds a token or coin, a reminder of his status as a ruler and issuer of currency. The background features a classical architectural setting, evoking the grandeur and majesty of the Roman Caesars and Germanic Kaisers. Henry II is an important figure in European history, particularly for his role in the Salian or Salic dynasty.
