EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Asidonia," is a stunning representation of various marine creatures from different geological eras, created by the renowned German naturalist Ernst Haeckel in 1904. The illustration, published in his seminal work "Art Forms in Nature," showcases an intriguing assemblage of marine life forms, including several extinct species. At the center of the image, we find the horseshoe crab (Tachypleus gigas), a living fossil that has survived for over 450 million years. Surrounding the horseshoe crab are several extinct marine arthropods, such as sea scorpions and trilobites. The sea scorpions, represented by Eurypterus tetragonophthalmus, Pterygotus anglicus, and others, were a diverse group of marine arthropods that lived during the Paleozoic Era. With elongated bodies and pincer-like appendages, they were formidable predators in their time. The trilobites, depicted as fossils in the image, were an incredibly successful group of marine arthropods that existed from the Early Cambrian to the End Permian periods. Some of the trilobite species shown include Onnia goldfussi, Deiphon forbesi, Phacops latifrons, Asteropyge punctata, Raphiophorus rouaulti, Paradoxides bohemicus, Cheirurus insignis, Selenopeltis buchi, Megistaspidella extenuata, Bohemoharpes ungula, Agnostus pisiformis, Trochurus speciosus, Eccaparadoxides pusillus, Sphaerexochus mirus, and Triarthrus becki. This remarkable illustration offers a glimpse into the rich diversity of marine life that has existed throughout Earth's history, highlighting the importance of preserving and studying our planet's natural wonders.
