This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Science) in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two intriguing crab species: the Periscope crab (Podophthalmus vigil) and the Flower crab (Portunus pelagicus), also known as the Spiny-eyed crab and the Pebble crab respectively. The meticulously detailed illustration, engraved by Stanghi under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, highlights the unique features of each crab. The Periscope crab, depicted in the foreground, derives its name from its ability to extend its eyes above its carapace, providing a 360-degree view of its surroundings.
