EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Marcus Julius Philippus Severus, better known as Philip II, who ruled from 244 to 249 AD. The image is taken from the 17th-century work "The Roman Monarchy" by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht by Abraham Bogaert. Philip II is shown in regal attire, wearing a laurel wreath and holding a scepter, symbolizing his imperial power. Philip II was the son of Decius Caesar and Herennia Etruscilla. He was born in Sirmium, in the province of Pannonia, and came to power after the assassination of his father in 249 AD. During his reign, he faced numerous challenges, including rebellions and invasions. He was known for his military prowess and was able to maintain the stability of the Roman Empire. The portrait is a copperplate engraving, a popular printing technique in the 17th century. The intricate details of the engraving bring the portrait to life, allowing us to see the subtle textures of the emperor's clothing and the expressiveness of his face. The background is adorned with classical motifs, including columns and a triumphal arch, further emphasizing Philip II's imperial status. Philip II was succeeded by his son, Marcus Aurelius Gordianus III, who ruled from 238 to 244 AD, and his grandson, Marcus Aurelius Gordianus Pius, who ruled for a brief period in 249 AD before being assassinated. The legacy of the Caesars and Kaisers, as they were known in the Roman world, continued to shape history for centuries to come. This portrait is a testament to the enduring power and influence of the Roman Empire, and serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire us today.
