EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration showcases the reconstruction of the extinct Mastodonsaurus giganteus, a massive marine reptile that roamed the Earth during the Upper Triassic period, around 245 to 237 million years ago. The Mastodonsaurus was one of the earliest known members of the Sauropterygia, a diverse group of long-necked, marine reptiles. The illustration, taken from Wilhelm Bolsche's "Das Leben der Urwelt" or "Prehistoric Life," published in Leipzig, Germany, in 1932, offers a vibrant and detailed depiction of the Mastodonsaurus in its natural habitat. The creature is shown swimming gracefully through the waters, its elongated neck and powerful tail propelling it forward. The map in the background provides a glimpse into the geography of the world during the Upper Triassic period. The continents are arranged differently than they are today, with North America and Europe connected by a land bridge, and Asia and Australia part of the larger supercontinent of Gondwanaland. The Atlantic Ocean is also shown, with the possible existence of the lost continent of Atlantis a topic of much debate among scientists at the time. The Mastodonsaurus was a formidable creature, measuring up to 30 feet long and weighing several tons. Its large size and powerful jaws made it a formidable predator in the ancient seas. Today, it remains an intriguing subject of study for zoologists, paleontologists, and anyone with a fascination for the wonders of prehistory.
