EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored woodblock engraving is taken from the 1557 edition of Adam Lonicer's renowned herbal, "Krauterbuch," or "Herbal," published in Frankfurt. The illustration features two distinct plants: Silverweed (Potentilla anserina) and Hare's Ear (Bupleurum rotundifolium). Silverweed, also known as Silverweed Anemone or Duckweed Potentilla, is depicted in the foreground. This small, low-growing plant is characterized by its silvery-white, kidney-shaped leaves, which are arranged in a rosette at the base of the stem. Silverweed is native to Europe and parts of Asia and was traditionally used in herbal medicine for various ailments, including wounds, burns, and skin conditions. In the background, Hare's Ear, also known as Round-leaved Hedge-woundwort, is illustrated. This herbaceous perennial plant is easily identified by its round, lobed leaves and umbels of small, blue or purple flowers. Hare's Ear was used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, particularly for treating wounds, ulcers, and skin irritations. This woodblock engraving is a beautiful example of the intricate detail and artistry that characterized botanical illustrations during the Renaissance. The illustration is hand-colored, adding to its visual appeal, and features captions in multiple languages, including Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and English, reflecting the international reach of Lonicer's influential work.
