EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts an awe-inspiring view of the construction progress of the iconic Forth Bridge in Scotland during the late Victorian or early Edwardian era. The Forth Bridge, an engineering marvel of its time, was the longest single cantilever bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1890. Measuring an impressive 2,527 meters (8,291 feet) in length and 106 meters (348 feet) in height, the bridge spanned the Firth of Forth, connecting the towns of North and South Queensferry. This photograph captures the sheer scale of the construction effort, with workers and machinery dwarfed by the towering girders and arches that would eventually form this architectural wonder. The Forth Bridge was a testament to the ingenuity and determination of its builders, who overcame numerous challenges during its construction. The bridge's unique design, featuring two railway tracks on each of its cantilevers, required the use of innovative techniques and engineering solutions. The construction process involved the careful alignment of the cantilevers, which were built from both sides and met in the middle, creating a continuous structure. This photograph from The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection offers a glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the monumental task of building the Forth Bridge. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to marvel at the engineering prowess and determination of those who brought this iconic structure to life.
