EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts a significant moment in the Ottoman Empire's administrative history, featuring four distinguished figures from the late 19th century. From left to right, we see Grand Vizier Kaim-Mekam, Reis Efendi, and Khadjedhian, a member of the Divan. The Grand Vizier, also known as the Kaymakam or Qaim Maqam, was the highest-ranking official in the Ottoman government and the chief advisor to the Sultan. He is depicted wearing a conical hat, a sign of his high office, and a long, flowing robe. Next to him stands Reis Efendi, the president of the Supreme Council of Judges and Justice, who was responsible for the administration of justice in the empire. He is shown wearing a turban and a long, bearded face, in accordance with the customs of the time. Khadjedhian, the member of the Divan, is the third figure in the image. The Divan was the supreme legislative and executive council of the Ottoman Empire, and its members were the most influential politicians and administrators. Khadjedhian is depicted wearing a hat with a distinctive shape and a long, flowing robe, as was the fashion for office bearers of the time. The engraving, produced by Lemaitre, Lalaisse, and Lesueur for the 1840 publication "Historia de Turquia" by Jouannin and Van Gaver, offers a fascinating glimpse into the political and administrative structures of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century. The bearded faces, flowing robes, and distinctive headgear of the figures serve as a reminder of the unique customs and traditions that shaped the Ottoman world.
