The Blackburn B-54 (company designation), or YA.5 (SBAC designation), was designed to meet Specification GR.17/45 for an advanced carrier-borne anti-submarine aircraft, competing with the Fairey 17 (later - Fairey Gannet). The original Y.A.5 was designed to take the new Napier Coupled Naiad turboprop Engine, consisting of two single Naiads driving contra-rotating propellers through a common gearbox. This Engine was cancelled, so the Y.A.5 flew as the Y.A.7 with a Rolls Royce Griffon 56 piston Engine driving contra-rotating propellers. This photograph captures the Blackburn YA.7 WB781, a carrier-borne anti-submarine aircraft, resting on the Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough fire dump in the late 1950s. The Blackburn B-54, or YA.5 as it was known to the Society of British Aircraft Constructors (SBAC), was designed to meet Specification GR.17/45 for an advanced anti-submarine aircraft, competing against the Fairey Gannet. The original Y.A.5 was intended to be powered by the Napier Coupled Naiad turboprop engine, consisting of two single Naiads driving contra-rotating propellers through a common gearbox. However, the Napier engine was cancelled, and the Y.A.5 flew instead with a Rolls Royce Griffon 56 piston engine, as seen in WB781. In the background, the damaged fuselage of YA.8 WB788 can be seen, already partly consumed by fire. WB788 was a three-seat variant of the Blackburn B-54, first flown on 3 May 1950, also with a Rolls Royce Griffon piston engine. Another variant, the three-seat YB.1 WB797, first flew on 19 July 1950 with an Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba turboprop engine. Despite the intended use of the Napier engine, the Blackburn B-54 series never flew with turboprop power. WB781, with its Rolls Royce Griffon piston engine, represents an important chapter in the development of this advanced anti-submarine aircraft. The photograph serves as a reminder of the evolution of aircraft technology during this era and the challenges faced in bringing new engines to fruition.
