EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the United States Air Force's Northrop F-89D Scorpion jet fighter with the serial number 53-2536. The image was taken at Detroit, Michigan, in 1954, when the aircraft was first assigned to the United States Air Force as an F-89D. At that time, it was part of the 176th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron and the 115th Fighter-Interceptor Group, based at Truax Field in Wisconsin. Later in 1957, the F-89D was transferred to the 126th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron of the Wisconsin Air National Guard, which was part of the 128th Fighter-Interceptor Group at General Mitchell Field in Milwaukee. The exact date of the photograph is unknown, but it is known that in 1958, the F-89D was loaned to the National Museum of the United States Air Force's Loan Program. The aircraft eventually found its permanent home at the EAA Airventure Museum at Wittman Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The F-89D Scorpion was a significant aircraft in the United States Air Force's inventory during the late 1950s and early 1960s, and this photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into its history.
