Avro Lancaster II LL735: Pioneering the Future of Aviation Technology in 1943 This historic photograph captures the Avro Lancaster II, registration number LL735, as it undergoes groundbreaking tests for Metropolitan-Vickers in 1943. The Avro Lancaster II, a iconic British heavy bomber used extensively during World War II, was selected by Metropolitan-Vickers for the experimental integration of advanced gas turbine engines. The F2/1 gas turbine, visible in the foreground of the image, was the first engine to be tested on this Lancaster. This marked a significant milestone in aviation history as it was the first time a gas turbine was used in a large aircraft.
