EDITORS COMMENTS
Avro Lancaster II LL735: Pioneering the Future of Aviation Technology in 1943 This historic photograph captures the Avro Lancaster II, registration number LL735, as it undergoes groundbreaking tests for Metropolitan-Vickers in 1943. The Avro Lancaster II, a iconic British heavy bomber used extensively during World War II, was selected by Metropolitan-Vickers for the experimental integration of advanced gas turbine engines. The F2/1 gas turbine, visible in the foreground of the image, was the first engine to be tested on this Lancaster. This marked a significant milestone in aviation history as it was the first time a gas turbine was used in a large aircraft. The potential benefits of gas turbine engines, including increased efficiency and power, were recognized by the aviation industry, and this test marked the beginning of the shift from piston engines to jet propulsion. Later in 1945, the Lancaster II, now equipped with the more advanced F2/4 Beryl engine, continued its role as a testbed for Metropolitan-Vickers. The F2/4 Beryl engine, a more powerful and efficient variant of the F2/1, paved the way for the development of the first jet-powered transport aircraft, the Vickers VC.1 Viking. This photograph is a testament to the groundbreaking work carried out by Metropolitan-Vickers during the 1940s, pushing the boundaries of aviation technology and shaping the future of air travel.
