EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant studio photograph captures the image of Private Alexander Anderson, a brave British soldier from the 5th Royal Berks Regiment, taken during his recovery from influenza at Quex Park VAD Hospital in Margate, England. The image, printed by The Clock Tower Studios, shows Private Anderson in his khaki uniform, with a serious yet hopeful expression on his face. The reverse of the print bears the inscription "To Madam" and the signature of the soldier, "From 10608 Pte. A. Anderson." Private Anderson was a patient at Quex Park between January 14th and February 25th, 1915. Sadly, he did not recover fully and later died of wounds on September 25th, 1915. He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium, as he has no known grave. Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on October 15th, 1914, and was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park, who founded the Powell-Cotton Museum. The hospital treated soldiers recovering from various injuries and illnesses, including influenza, and closed on January 31st, 1919. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the First World War and the important role of hospitals in caring for them.
