A general view of grazing elephants at Kimana Sanctuary in Kimana, Kenya, on March 2
2021. - A turf war has erupted over a 180-acre avocado farm near one of Kenyas premier national parks, where elephants and other wildlife graze against the striking backdrop of Africas highest peak.
Opponents of the farm say it obstructs the free movement of iconic tuskers -- putting their very existence at risk -- and clashes with traditional ways of using the land.
The farms backers refute this, saying their development poses no threat to wildlife and generates much-needed jobs on idle land.
The rift underscores a broader struggle for dwindling resources that echoes beyond Kenya, as wilderness is constricted by expanding farmland to feed a growing population. (Photo by Yasuyoshi CHIBA / AFP)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a general view of grazing elephants at Kimana Sanctuary in Kimana, Kenya. The image showcases the serene beauty of these majestic creatures against the backdrop of Africa's highest peak. However, hidden behind this picturesque scene lies a fierce turf war over a 180-acre avocado farm located near one of Kenya's premier national parks. Critics argue that the farm disrupts the free movement of iconic tuskers, endangering their very existence and clashing with traditional land usage practices. On the other hand, supporters vehemently deny these claims, asserting that their development poses no threat to wildlife and instead creates much-needed employment opportunities on previously unused land. This conflict highlights a larger struggle for diminishing resources that extends far beyond Kenya's borders. As agricultural lands expand to meet the demands of an ever-growing population, wilderness areas are increasingly constricted. This clash between conservation and agriculture underscores the delicate balance between human progress and preserving our natural heritage. Photographer Yasuyoshi Chiba masterfully captures this poignant moment in time when nature's tranquility clashes with mankind's pursuit for sustenance and economic growth. Through his lens, we are reminded of both the fragility and resilience inherent in our coexistence with wildlife as we navigate an increasingly crowded world seeking harmony between humans and nature.
