Dated 21 May 1936, this image showcases the colossal German zeppelin peacefully floating above Lakehurst in the United States. As one of the largest aircraft ever constructed, it represented a remarkable feat of engineering and innovation. However, tragedy struck just over a year later on 6 May 1937 when disaster befell this magnificent airship. While attempting to land at New Jersey's Lakehurst Naval Air Station, the Hindenburg suddenly burst into flames only 200 feet above its intended landing spot. The catastrophic event claimed the lives of 35 out of its 97 passengers, as well as one crewman on the ground.
